CCFP-ISN Lecture Series On Nephrology

Recorded On: 02/27/2026

The Caribbean College of Family Physicians and the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) are joining forces to deliver a series of virtual lectures on nephrology aimed at enhancing the knowledge and skills of physicians and nephrologists in Jamaica and the broader Caribbean region. This educational initiative seeks to address the unique challenges faced by medical professionals in these areas by providing them with up-to-date information and best practices in nephrology. The series will feature prominent experts in the field, beginning with a lecture on June 27, 2024, by Prof. Edgar Lerma, who will discuss the “Approach to the Patient with an Elevated Serum Creatinine.”

The primary goal of these lectures is to foster a deeper understanding of nephrological conditions and improve patient care outcomes in the Caribbean. By facilitating access to cutting-edge research and expert insights, the series aims to equip local healthcare providers with the necessary tools to effectively manage and treat renal diseases. The inaugural lecture will include a panel discussion featuring Dr. Lori Fisher, Prof. Marvin Reid,  and Prof. Edgar Lerma, promoting interactive learning and collaborative dialogue. This initiative underscores the commitment of both the Caribbean College of Family Physicians and ISN to advancing medical education and strengthening healthcare systems in the region.

Participants will learn about the pathophysiology of diabetic nephropathy, emerging diagnostic approaches, and treatment modalities. The seminar will also highlight global perspectives on prevention, multidisciplinary care, and patient education to reduce the burden of kidney complications in people living with diabetes. We aim to empower primary care providers to identify early diabetic kidney disease and initiate evidence-based therapies and promote timely and appropriate referral to nephrology.
